DrJava is a lightweight IDE for the Java programming language. Designed primarily for beginners and actively developed and maintained by the JavaPLT group at Rice University, its interface uses Sun Microsystems' Swing toolkit and therefore has a consistent appearance on different platforms. DrJava has the ability to interactively evaluate Java code from a console and to present output as well to the same console. It has many other features that have been designed for advanced users as well. DrJava offers a JUnit test facility.

To get the latest Java from Oracle, you will need Mac OS X 10.7.3 and above. If you have Java 7 or later versions, you will see a Java icon under System Preferences. Java versions 6 and below are listed in the Java Preferences.app located in the Applications Utilities folder on your Mac. 'Download Windows App via HTTP' or 'Download Mac OS App via HTTP' then choose any mirror. If you do this, you can skip steps 2-4 below. Insert the CD from the front cover of the Nino & Hosch textbook, and it automatically open up a web browser showing the DrJava readme. Click on the link that reads 'DrJava for Windows (.exe).'

  • There are several ways to run DrJava: From the command line, you can type java -jar drjava-stable-200.jar; On many platforms, you can simply double-click the jar file to start DrJava. On OS X, you can download the drjava-stable-200.jar-osx.tar.gz package. You can then run DrJava as a normal application.
